Current News at Greenwood
- Mallory Clouse
captured the Third Place Award, Senior
Individual Division, at the International Future
Problem Solving (FPS) Competition held June 9 -
12 at the University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse.
Clouse was one of two Kentucky students invited
to compete at the International Competition in
the Individual Senior Division based on
qualifying scores from the Kentucky State
Competition. The 2011 state qualifying topic was
"Water Quality," and the International Global
Issues topic was "Emergency Planning."
Clouse has competed for the last three years on
the Greenwood FPS Team and in the Kentucky State
Individual FPS Competition. The Greenwood team
has won the district team competition for the
last five years and was awarded sixth place at
the Kentucky State Governor's Cup competition in
March 2010. Mallory is the first Greenwood
student to compete at the International
Competition.
Steven Owens took first
place in the Agriculture Engineering division at
the State FFA Agri-Science contest in Lexington
last month. This qualified him for the National
Agri-Science contest in Indianapolis, which will
take place at the national FFA Convention in
October. In the state competition, Owens made an
incubator out of a kitchen cabinet.

Other Information

Absences from school:
Parents/Guardians are to notify the attendance office each
day by 8:00 am, if your student is not going to be at
school.
If a student comes in late or leaves early or is out of
school all day, a note must be submitted to excuse the
absence. If a parent/guardian signs a student in or out of
the building during the school day, a note must also be
submitted to excuse the portion of the day missed. Although
parents sign a student in or out on the attendance log, a
separate written parent note (or doctor’s note) must also be
submitted; otherwise the portion of the day missed will not
be counted as excused. You are allowed to write 5 parent notes for absences per
semester as well as 5 parent notes for tardies per semester.
A tardy is defined as the first 60 minutes of the school day
or the last 60 minutes of the school. All parent notes
must be turned into the attendance office within 5 days of
the absence.
- Student Check Out
Procedures:
Please have a photo ID present when you are checking out
your students. This is a very large school and we want to ensure the
safety of all of our students. I know many of our parents will know Mrs.
Larsen (our attendance clerk) and she will also know many of the
parents. However, it is possible that Mrs. Larsen may be away from her
desk and someone else who does not know you is doing the checking out.
Please have your photo ID available and it will be much smoother and
safer for our students.

School Resource Officer Notes from Officer
Kirby: Click
here for previous tips.
Myth: Fighting off campus will have less severe
consequences.
The fact is it
may have more consequences. Often school
administrators are able to resolve a discipline
issue by school discipline that never reaches the
level of a criminal law violation. Students should
realize that by saying, “We’ll take it off campus”
they are subjecting themselves to more danger and
the possibility of being arrested. Some of the
thinking behind this process is…we know we will get
caught at school, our parents will be notified and
we will be disciplined. Regardless of the violation
of law that is occurring students would be well
advised that leaving the safety umbrella of school
is a bad idea.
Drive Safely and always buckle up!
