GHS Athletics
Athletic pages
are updated when information
is received from the coaches or athletic director.
Athletic
Director Notes:
GHS Athletics Hall of Fame:
During the past year a committee has been
busy establishing an Athletic Hall of Fame to honor those outstanding
athletes, coaches, and teams that have made significant contributions to our
athletic heritage at Greenwood HS. There are over 200 athletes and 54 teams
that have met the standards that will qualify them for induction. It is our
hope to have the first inaugural class of 18 athletes, 2 coaches, 2 teams
and 1 individual booster inducted in December of 2011. Each athletic team
will have one inductee. (1 for boy’s soccer, 1 for girl’s soccer, 1 for
boys XC, 1 for girls XC, etc) Former Greenwood Coach Art Sciubba has
researched over 100 high school athletic halls of fame from across the
nation. By-laws have been written and approved by the Greenwood site-based
council. Documentation of Greenwoods athletes and teams is available for
review during the selection process. The coaches of each team have agreed
to a $100 donation from each team as start-up funds for the Hall of Fame.
The funds will be used for purchasing awards and a display case in the lobby
area of GHS. The $100 per team donation will come from each booster club.
(Boys and Girls count as 2 separate teams). The start-up donations need to
be in by the end of the school year (May 2011). Make the checks out to
Greenwood HS Athletic Hall of Fame. If you have any questions you may
contact the Athletic Director (Mr. Todd Tolbert) or Email Mr. Art Sciubba
txcoach.sciubba@hotmail.com
For home baseball and softball games, admission
for varsity games is $5 per person and $4 per person for junior
varsity/freshmen games. For those who have purchased passes,
please make sure to have them available to present to the ticket taker
assigned to work the gate.
Please be advised that some events may be
canceled with late notice due to weather conditions that may change
rapidly during spring events. When possible, cancellations for
practices and games will be made during afternoon announcements so
players and parents may know of the status of their games before school
is out on that day.
Bowling will be offered for both girls and boys
during the 2011-12 school year. This will be a new varsity sport
that will have a state tournament at the end of the season like other
sports. Bowling will be a sport played during basketball season
(winter-sport season. Any boy or girl interested in bowling needs
to contact Athletic Director, Todd Tolbert.
NOTE: All head coaches are reminded to always have an AED at your
practice and game sites at all times along with a copy of each
student-athletes' KHSAA phyical forms.
Lifetime
passes for families are still available. Lifetime passes
are for the entire immediate family and are on sale for a
donation to the school of $1,000. Many families have taken
advantage of a "lifetime pass" at Greenwood High School and
have actually saved hundreds of dollars. They can be
purchased with a one payment, quarterly payments, or monthly
payments. Contact Todd Tolbert by e-mail at
todd.tolbert@warren.kyschools.us or by phone at 842-3627
ext. 1855 for more details.
Note: All coaches are to keep a completed KHSAA physical of each
student-athlete with them at all times. An AED should be at
each game/match site. Student-athletes need to inform
coaches any time that there is an injury so an injury report
can be filled out and a K and K Insurance form can be
obtained.
All athletes MUST make sure that they have an up-to-date
physical on file. If a physical expires during the season,
then the coach of that athlete MUST hold that athlete out of
practice or games until a new physical is placed on file in
the athletic director's office.

When coming to athletic events, please be advised that NO
PETS are allowed. Also, students should know that when coming
to a GHS athletic event, that they are to stay in the facility
the entire time until they are leaving to go home. Several are
asking to go in and out. If someone leaves, then that person
will have to pay to get back into the facility. A sports pass
is not a pass "to come and go as you please" pass. The sports
pass states on the pass that it is valid for one time through
the gate.
-
All
student-athletes MUST complete the four-page KHSAA physical document
before they may participate in open gyms, try-outs, practices,
and/or games. Physical forms may be printed off at KHSAA.ORG
(forms).
-
Grade checks are every Friday. It is important that each athlete
maintains their required academic minimums to be able to practice or
play.
-
WKCT, 930AM, is now the official radio station that will be covering all
football games and maybe even all basketball games. WKCT is looking for
sponsors that want to advertise during the games and will also get about
80 spots in addition during the week. If you or your business would
like to be a part of this program, then contact Athletic Director, Todd
Tolbert, at 842-3627 ext. 1855.
-
If any student has transferred to Greenwood this school year and
has ever attended high school prior to Greenwood, then each student MUST
fill out transfer paperwork BEFORE they may be ruled eligible to play
ANY SPORT(S). Each head coach is responsible for starting paperwork for
their sport. New students to Greenwood should contact the Athletic
Director for advisement.
-
All athletes MUST have a KHSAA Physical Form completed (including
student and parent signatures and dates; insurance information; a
physical dated and signed by a doctor; and emergency contact numbers)
before they may participate in any open gyms, conditioning, try-outs,
and/or practices. Every line of every page MUST be completed before any
participation is allowed. All paperwork MUST be turned in to the
Athletic Director prior to participation.
Grade checks are every Friday. Student-athletes must meet the
minimum passing requirements to be eligible. Teachers are required
to have grades in by the end of the day each Thursday to make sure
grades are up-to-date.
If you are interested in applying to
the NCAA Clearinghouse, follow these steps:
1) Go on-line to
www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. Sign up as "Perspective Student
Athlete". 2) Fill out all information. 3) Make payment for NCAA services. 4) Download "NCAA Transcript Release Authorization" - If the
student is under 18 yrs of age, the student and parent/guardian
must sign release. If the student is 18 years of age or older,
the student may sign. 5) The student should bring the application to Guidance. The
appropriate GHS staff member will then mail the student's
"preliminary" transcript to NCAA. 6) After senior
grades are finalized, a "final" transcript will be mailed to
the NCAA Clearinghouse by the appropriate GHS staff
member.

Please check out our
All Athletic
Boosters web site at www.swampit.org
that is sponsored by Walker Financial Services. The Greenwood Alumni
Boosters is now a booster organization that is looking to greatly expand our
schools' facilities and enhance our current programs. If you know a
Greenwood alumnus, then please direct them to our Alumni page at our
GHS web site.
We are beginning to develop an alumni directory and also start contacting
them to see if they will participate in helping our school. Some
possible projects may include a new home side of the football stadium (now
the visitors' side) that would have a middle section of chair back seats. A
new field house could be built under the new bleachers which would allow for
teams (that don't currently have a "home") to use the current field house.
We are looking into building a multi-purpose facility that could house a
hitting facility, possibly a basketball/volleyball court, and have a room
large enough for the cheerleaders and dance teams to practice. Locker rooms
could be built so the soccer teams could have dressing rooms near their
practice/game field. It is also time to consider new bleachers in the
gym. We still have the original bleachers that were installed in 1990. A new
set of bleachers could include the lower arena with chair back seats. The
seats would be a dark green instead of the tan color we have now. Another
item on the wish list would be to add two tennis courts. If you would like
to sponsor any of these projects, then contact Todd Tolbert, Athletic
Director, at 842-3627 ext. 1855.
